Three Things Your Mum Probably Told You (and how they apply to learning)

“Don’t talk to Strangers”

Well, it worked when you were a kid but most adults talk to strangers all the time as part of their job. Sometimes we even meet up after chatting on LinkedIn or Twitter. (What would your mother say!) Some of us do it on our own with no one around to help us out if the stranger turns out to be “a baddie!” Lone workers often get no training in how to deal with difficult situations and are left vulnerable, without systems in place to protect them. Now most people we meet are very nice but it does make sense to take steps to protect yourself and your staff. Learn what the risks are, how to avoid unnecessary risk and be prepared to react quickly if you do find yourself in a dangerous situation. Take steps to find out how you can improve your Personal Safety.

“I dont care who started it - just finish it”
If you have siblings you’ve no doubt heard that one. You and your  brother  might have sorted an argument out by slapping each other around a bit then going off in a sulk.  Very much disapproved off at work I find (but it would more than likely give you a bit more leisure time whilst you look for a new job!) Negotiatiating win-win solutions, managing meetings effectively and dealing with difficult people are key skills we all need to work on.

“Whilst you’re under my roof you’ll stick to my rules”
You can’t stroll into a training course 3 hours late if you’ve got better things to do. You might want to stamp your feet and shout this to the trainer  ” It’s not fair! I only want to know how to do a mailmerge – why do I need to listen to all this other stuff?”  Hurrah for e-learning! You can go at your own pace. Learn when it suits you. And if mailmerge is all you need to learn about in this 8 hour microsoft word course, that’s fine too.
